What Is AEO, and Why Should Your Business Care?

Quick test: the next time you have a question, notice what you actually do. Do you type it into Google and scroll through ten blue links? Or do you ask ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overview, or Siri and just… get an answer?

If you’re like most people these days, it’s increasingly the second option. And that shift is exactly why a new acronym is showing up in marketing conversations: AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization.

SEO vs. AEO: What’s the Difference?

For the past two decades, businesses have focused on SEO (Search Engine Optimization), making sure their website ranks high on Google’s results page. That’s still important. But AI-powered “answer engines” like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, and voice assistants don’t just rank pages. They read the web, synthesize information, and hand the user a direct answer, often without a single click.

That means there’s a whole new competition happening: not for the top spot on a results page, but for whether your business gets mentioned in the answer at all.

AEO is the practice of structuring your content, your website, and your online presence so that AI systems can easily understand, trust, and quote your business when someone asks a relevant question.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Here’s the uncomfortable part: if an AI engine answers a customer’s question without ever sending them to a website, and your business isn’t part of that answer, you may never even know you lost the opportunity. There’s no missed click to track. You simply don’t exist in that conversation.

For local businesses especially, this is a big deal. Someone asks, “What’s the best HVAC company near me?” or “Who does custom cabinetry in my area?” and increasingly, an AI tool is doing the recommending. If your business isn’t structured to be found and understood by these systems, a competitor’s will be, and they’ll get the call.

What Actually Helps With AEO

A few things tend to make a real difference:

  • Clear, direct answers on your website. AI tools favor content that plainly answers a question, rather than pages that bury the point under marketing fluff.
  • Structured data (schema markup). This is behind-the-scenes code that tells search and AI engines exactly what your business is, what it does, and where it’s located.
  • Consistent business information across the web. Your name, address, phone number, and services should match everywhere, your website, Google Business Profile, directories, and review sites.
  • Strong reviews and mentions. AI tools weigh credibility signals like reviews, citations, and third-party mentions when deciding what to recommend.
  • FAQ-style content. Pages that directly answer common customer questions are exactly the kind of content answer engines love to pull from.

The Bottom Line

AEO isn’t replacing SEO, it’s sitting alongside it as a new layer of visibility you need to compete for. The businesses that adapt early will be the ones showing up in AI-generated answers a year from now. The ones that don’t will be wondering why their phone stopped ringing.
